What is a Transfer Case Assembly?

A transfer case is a powertrain component that serves as a link between the transmission and the front and rear driveshafts in vehicles with four-wheel drive. When four-wheel drive is activated, the transfer case is responsible for shifting gears and allowing power to be supplied to the front axles and wheels in addition to the rear differential. This allows the driver to control when power is applied to all four wheels in low-traction conditions. Transfer cases may be shifted using a cable or an electric actuator, and these components may suffer damage and prevent the transfer case from operating. It's also possible for the gears, chains, and other components inside the transfer case to suffer wear or damage due to low fluid levels or other factors, which can cause transfer case slipping and failure. If you aren't able to shift into or out of four-wheel drive, check your transfer case fluid level and condition. If the fluid is burnt or low, there may be a problem inside the transfer case. In some cases, transfer cases can be rebuilt, but replacing a worn or damaged transfer case with a complete transfer case assembly is often the simplest repair solution. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a full line of four-wheel-drive replacement parts, including transfer cases, actuators, shift cables, and more to help you keep your vehicle driving at its best.
