What is a Driveshaft?

The driveshaft, also known as a prop shaft, is the link between your transmission or transfer case and the front or rear differential that is used for transmitting power and torque to turn the wheels. Commonly found in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, the driveshaft has universal joints (U-joints) on both ends to allow for suspension movement, flexibility, and rotation without binding as the rear end traverses bumps or rough terrain. When manufactured, a driveshaft is carefully balanced, but damage can occur to the U-joints or the driveshaft itself over time. An unbalanced or loose drive shaft can lead to issues with handling, performance, and safety, and will likely cause noticeable noise or changes in the way the vehicle drives. Damaged, worn, or out-of-balance driveshafts can cause unusual shaking or vibrations felt under the vehicle, binding when going over bumps, or loud clunking noises while driving, and should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. These issues may also be caused by failing or under-lubricated U-joints, a damaged or worn slip yoke, or failed rubber bushings or center support bearings, so be sure to inspect these components in addition to assessing the condition of your driveshaft for a complete diagnosis. For your next driveshaft repair, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts, where we carry replacement U-joints, bearings, grease, and complete drive shaft assemblies to help you restore your vehicle's comfort and performance.
