Axle Shaft Replacements

The axle shaft, often simply referred to as an axle, is part of the drivetrain that connects the wheels to the carrier and the ring and pinion of the differential. These are commonly found in rear axle assemblies on rear-wheel-drive vehicles, but can also be found on the front and rear of four-wheel-drive vehicles. Axle shafts are responsible for transferring torque from the differential to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move. Most axle shafts have splines and a retainer on one end that mesh with the carrier inside the differential, and often have lug studs on the other end to mount the brake rotor or drum and the wheels. In the case of four-wheel drive vehicles with solid front axles, the front axle shafts may also have U-joints that allow the front wheels to turn as needed. Axles can bend, suffer wear over time, or most commonly, the axle's surface may be damaged by a failed axle bearing and throw the bearing and axle out of tolerance. Symptoms of a bad axle shaft can include clicking or clunking noises, especially when turning, and you may also notice vibrations while driving or notice off-center rotation of the wheel. In some cases an offset repair bearing that shifts the position of the integrated bearing seal to contact a different point on the axle may allow you to continue to use a worn axle shaft, but if the axle is bent or severely damaged, it will need to be replaced. If you need a replacement axle shaft, axle bearings, or repair bearings, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for the drivetrain and differential parts required for a complete, lasting repair.
