The differential is a component that transfers power from the transmission and driveshaft to the wheels and allows the wheels to turn at different speeds, which is necessary for turning and cornering. Because there are so many rotating parts, the differential and axle housing include a number of seals and bearings to keep everything turning smoothly and gear oil from leaking during operation. Bearings allow the pinion gear, axle shafts, and other components to rotate and remain centered in the housing.
