The pinion is the drive gear located in your vehicle's differential which receives power from the driveshaft. The pinion then rotates and turns the ring gear, which engages and powers the axle shafts. The pinion rides on the pinion bearing and race which allows it to rotate freely with minimal friction or interference. The pinion bearing is usually a roller-style bearing, and the race is the smooth machined contact surface which allows the bearing to rotate and move freely. These parts are imperative to the operation of the differential, as any friction or resistance in the bearing can cause the pinion shaft to bind and lead to ring or pinion gear damage, U-joint wear and failure, and other issues. Age and low gear oil levels in the differential or axle assembly can lead to friction that may damage the bearing and race. When the bearing or race are damaged, the pinion may not roll smoothly, and this can cause a whirring noise when speeding up or slowing down, looseness or play in the differential gears, and could eventually lead to more severe damage. If you notice noises from your axle, differential, or driveshaft, check the condition of your bearings and U-joints as well as the fluid level in the differential housing. If any of these parts need to be replaced, or if you need to change the differential gear oil, you can find all the parts and supplies you need at O'Reilly Auto Parts. We carry replacement pinion bearings, U-joints, or other differential parts to help you restore your vehicle's performance and driveability.
