The transmission in your Ford Mustang is connected to the differential using the driveshaft. One end of the driveshaft is connected to the pinion gear in the differential, and the pinion gear uses a bearing that allows the gear shaft to turn smoothly and keep it from loosening. Over time, or when gear oil levels fall too low, the pinion bearing can wear out, causing a high-pitched whirring or rumbling sound from the differential or a loose pinion shaft. This can cause accelerated wear on the gears in the differential, as well as the pinion shaft itself. If the pinion bearing has worn out, or if low gear oil levels have damaged the pinion bearing, it should be replaced to keep your car driving at its best. If your Ford Mustang needs a replacement pinion bearing, pinion or ring gear, or a driveshaft universal joint, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a wide range of differential parts for your Mustang to keep your car on the road.
