What is a Differential Bearing Race?

An axle differential race, also called a differential bearing race, provides the differential bearing with a smooth contact surface that allows parts of the differential to rotate smoothly. The differential transfers power from the transmission and driveshaft to the wheels, and allows the vehicle's wheels to rotate at different speeds during turns while maintaining optimal power distribution and traction. Differential bearing races are machined smooth from the factory, but can suffer damage over time or due to low or contaminated gear oil. A worn axle differential race or axle bearing may result in rumbling, whirring, or grinding noises beneath the vehicle, and these noises may also change while making turns. If the differential produces a consistent knocking sound, then it may indicate an issue with the differential gears themselves, and a full differential diagnosis may be necessary to isolate and repair the source of the problem. If you've noticed any of the above issues, inspect your differential and axle bearings and races, the ring and pinion gears, and the gear oil level and condition inside the differential to diagnose the source of the problem before beginning any repairs. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement differential bearing races, bearings, gear oil, limited slip additives, and more for a complete repair.
