What Is A Differential Pinion Seal?

A pinion seal is located in rear-wheel drive differentials and prevents gear oil from leaking past the pinion shaft. Differential fluid is a grease that helps lubricate the differential's gears and bearings for proper vehicle performance. The pinion seal is installed in the differential housing, and the pinion shaft is inserted through it to ensure that it can seal properly as the driveshaft and pinion rotate. This may require resetting the pinion preload and removing and reinstalling other parts of the differential, so it is often a good time to also replace parts like axle seals and bearings, differential cover gaskets, and more to ensure a complete repair. Signs that you may need a new pinion seal include a howling or whining noise while driving, low differential fluid or gear oil levels, or small leaks underneath your vehicle's rear axle. Inspecting the axle housing can help you determine the source of the leak so that you can make an appropriate repair.
