An axle shaft seal, also known as a differential seal or axle seal, is used to seal around the axle shaft to prevent gear oil leaks and protect the differential from contamination and damage. The primary function of an axle shaft seal is to retain the gear oil within the differential housing while preventing the entry of dirt, water, and other contaminants and allowing the axle shaft to rotate. Like most seals, an axle seal can fail over time. This can be caused by age, lack of lubrication, or wear from contact with the axle itself. The seal may also become hard or brittle due to exposure to the elements, and this may cause accelerated wear to the sealing surface of the axle shaft that can lead to leaks. Common signs of a failing axle seal include fluid leaks around the axle area or a buildup of grease around the wheels behind the brakes. A decrease in gear oil levels within the differential, the presence of fluid on the inner edge of the vehicle's wheels, or noises from the differential can be an indicator of a differential leak, and you should inspect your axle shaft seals, pinion seals, and differential cover gasket for any signs of damage or oil. Shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for the replacement differential seals or axle seals you may need to repair most vehicles.
