Windshield Wiper Arms and Components

Windshield wiper arms connect the wiper blades to the wiper motors, and they help keep the wiper blades pressed firmly against the windshield. Wiper arms mount to the wiper motor or linkage and have a flexible hinge near the base so that they can be pulled away from the windshield to change the wiper blades. Most wiper arms also have a spring connected to the hinge that helps hold the wiper arm and wiper blade against the windshield. If the wiper arm is bent or the spring wears out, the wiper blade may have too much or too little pressure holding it against the windshield, or the wiper may no longer touch the windshield. You may need to check your wiper arms if you notice skipping, streaking, or excess noise while the windshield wipers operate. Worn wiper blades can also cause these symptoms, so you may want to replace them when you replace the wiper arms.
