Windshield wiper linkage bushings are plastic or rubber inserts used to connect the wiper linkage arms to the windshield wiper motor. This allows the windshield wiper motor to go through its full arc of motion without binding the linkage arm so the wipers move back and forth smoothly and efficiently. Over time, wiper linkage bushings may wear out due to exposure to the elements, heat, and the regular use of the wiper system. When these bushings deteriorate or are damaged, it can lead to erratic or out-of-sequence wiper movement, excessive noise during operation, poor wiper operation such as stuttering, or the wipers not moving at all. If your wipers are making a grinding noise, it may be coming from the wiper motor attempting to move a stuck or broken wiper linkage. Inspect the linkage, motor, and the wiper arms to determine the source of binding or poor performance, and replace the wiper linkage bushings if they are worn or damaged.
