What is a Distributor Cap and Rotor Set?

The distributor cap and rotor are responsible for transferring voltage from the ignition coil to the engine's spark plugs. When this voltage reaches the spark plug, it ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders to create power. The coil and spark plug wires are connected to the distributor cap, and the rotor spins inside the distributor cap in time with the camshaft to maintain appropriate ignition timing. The distributor cap has contacts on the bottom for the coil and each spark plug wire. When the rotor touches those contacts, it sends power through the distributor cap, rotor, and spark plug wire to the spark plug. Over time, the distributor cap or rotor can experience wear. If your distributor cap or rotor is failing, you may notice the engine misfires, or your vehicle may fail to start at all. If you suspect your distributor cap or rotor is to blame, inspect underneath your distributor cap for any corrosion or damage on the distributor cap or rotor contact points. If your rotor is not making a connection, pick up a distributor cap and rotor set at O'Reilly Auto Parts. We also carry breaker points, condensers, spark plugs, and complete distributors for your ignition system repair.
