What is a Diesel Injection Pump?

A diesel injector pump is driven mechanically by the engine to create pressure that is then used by the diesel injectors, comparable to a gasoline engine's fuel pump. Diesel injectors work similarly to gasoline injectors, except that the diesel injector pump is timed with the camshaft and supplies fuel differently than a gasoline injection system. This allows for higher pressure at the injector and more efficient fuel delivery as the engine needs it to maintain performance and engine operation. The diesel injector pump on your vehicle is a mechanical component, and can suffer wear or damage over time that can lead to failure or poor performance. Diesel injector pump failure symptoms include hard starts, an engine that runs rough or frequently misfires, excessive exhaust smoke, or a lack of power. A dirty fuel filter, clogged injectors, and other factors can also cause these symptoms, so it's a good idea to inspect the complete diesel fuel system for signs of damage before making repairs to the injector pump. When you're ready to make your diesel repair, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement fuel system parts and a variety of diesel fuel injector pumps for diesel vehicles to help you restore performance and reliability.
