What is a Spark Plug Tube Seal?

Spark plug tube seals prevent oil from escaping the cylinder head and valve cover. These tube seals attach to the top and bottom of the spark plug tube when the valve cover is installed for an air-tight seal that also protects the spark plug from oil contamination. These seals should often be replaced any time the valve cover has been removed to ensure that it is fully sealed. Over time, the spark plug tube seals may wear out and allow oil intrusion that can cause grease buildup on the spark plug. When spark plugs are contaminated by oil, it can interrupt the flow of current that allows spark to be generated, which may eventually lead to misfires or a dead cylinder. If you see oil leaking around the top or bottom of the spark plug tube around the seal, it could be a sign that your spark plug tube seals or the tubes themselves need to be replaced.
