The manifold temperature sensor measures the temperature of the air entering the engine and sends this data to the engine control module to calculate how much exhaust gas is recirculated to the intake. Also called air charge or intake air temperature sensors, these components are crucial parts of the engine management system. The manifold temperature sensor helps ensure optimal engine performance and emissions control, as well as maintaining an appropriate air-fuel mixture in turbocharged engines. This sensor helps convert the air temperature into an electrical signal that is then sent to the control module to adjust the air-fuel mixture, calculate ignition timing, control idle speed, and can alert the computer to any potential issues such as intake manifold air leaks. Typically located on the intake manifold for accurate, real-time readings, intake air temperature sensors can fail over time and cause incorrect temperature data. This can have negative effects on the air-fuel ratio and overall engine performance and may cause lean- or rich-running conditions and a failed emissions test. Signs of a bad manifold temperature sensor include a rough idle, reduced engine power, decreased fuel economy due to inefficient combustion, and an illuminated Check Engine light. Regular vehicle maintenance and inspection of your vehicle's manifold temperature sensor can help alert you to damage, and prevent poor engine performance and possible component damage. If you don't feel comfortable diagnosing or performing a manifold sensor repair, we can recommend a scan your Check Engine light for free at any local store to help you begin your diagnosis. Shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for the manifold temperature sensor replacement your vehicle needs to restore dependable, consistent performance.
