What is a Pitman Arm?

The pitman arm is a component of a vehicle's steering system that transfers the rotational forces generated from the steering gear box through the steering linkage and ultimately to the front wheels. The pitman arm is pressed onto the steering gear box output shaft with a large nut or bolt, and may require a puller or other specialty tools to remove or replace. As the steering gear box output shaft rotates, the pitman arm pivots, pushing and pulling the steering linkage to move back and forth and turning the front wheels of the vehicle. Over time, the pitman arm may wear out or suffer damage, which can cause steering problems such as looseness or vibrations. When your vehicle's steering wheel feels loose, if it starts wandering on the road, or if you experience weak steering response, the pitman arm may require replacement. Be sure to inspect your steering system, including the steering gear box, pitman arm, idler arm, tie rods, and more for a complete diagnosis before replacing your pitman arm.
