How Do Power Steering Systems Work?

Power steering systems are designed to make turning the steering wheel easier, and use a power steering pump to pressurize fluid that is sent to the rack and pinion unit or steering gearbox. When pressurized fluid leaves the power steering pump, it is carried by a power steering pressure line or pressure hose. Power steering pressure lines are typically made up of metal lines with threaded fittings at each end that are crimped onto high-pressure hoses for flexibility. Over time, your power steering pressure hose may suffer damage that can lead to leaks and a loss of pressure or power steering performance. Power steering hoses may leak near the crimped fitting, at the threaded fittings at either end, or the hose may become brittle and crack or split. Low power steering fluid levels caused by a leaking pressure hose can make turning your steering wheel difficult and make it harder to turn the vehicle, and you may also hear the power steering pump squealing or making excessive noise in tight turns. Check the power steering pressure hose for signs of damage if you notice low levels of power steering fluid, leaks, or if the power steering fluid turns dark from a buildup of rubber particles caused by the hose breaking down internally. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries power steering pressure hoses and lines that are designed for an exact fit, along with replacement power steering pumps, return hoses, power steering fluid, and more to help you make a complete power steering repair.
