What Is A Control Arm Bushing?

Your control arm, or "A" arm, connects the wheel end to a vehicle's chassis or frame, and may use ball joints to allow for steering. The control arm helps tires maintain better contact with the ground and allows the wheels to move vertically for improved comfort when driving on rough, uneven terrain. Control arm bushings help absorb road vibrations and prevent them from being transferred to the chassis, reducing noise and increasing ride comfort. Control arm bushings also keep the articulating points of the control arm tight to maintain alignment and ensure the control arm does not move excessively while driving. Failing control arm bushings can prevent the control arms from pivoting properly, or may become too loose and allow for excessive play in the control arm. This can affect alignment, handling, fuel economy, and tire wear. Signs of a bad control arm bushing include clunking noises when driving on uneven roads, a shaking steering wheel or vibrating floorboard, uneven tire wear, as well as the vehicle pulling to one side. Avoid an accident or suspension and steering system damage by inspecting and replacing failing control arm bushings and components if you notice signs of wear or failure. Inspecting the control arms for signs of cracked or torn bushings, excessive looseness, or damage can help you determine if they require service.
