Belts

The belts in your vehicle transfer the rotation of the crankshaft pulley to the engine accessories. Belts ensure accessories like the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor operate correctly and receive adequate power to keep these systems working as they should. Belts are also used as part of the engine timing system on many vehicles, which may require the water pump, belt tensioner, and idler pulleys to be replaced at all at the same time.

Serpentine and V-Belts

Depending on the age and manufacturer of your vehicle, your engine may use either a serpentine belt or V-belts. Most newer vehicles use a single serpentine belt which appears flat on one side with small ribs on the other to make contact with the engine accessory pulleys. Many older vehicles use V-belts to drive each accessory individually. V-belts get their name from their "V" shape and the shape of the pulley on the engine accessory. Always make sure you have the right style, size, and length of belt for your vehicle.

Find Belts and More

Belts and tensioners should be inspected regularly to ensure that they are not stretched or suffering from other damage. A belt that is stretched too far may not make adequate contact and could cause squealing, slipping, or belt damage if not addressed. If the belts on your vehicle are stretched, frayed, or cracked, you can find a replacement at O'Reilly Auto Parts. Replacing the tensioner is often recommended when the serpentine belt wears out, so for a complete repair or belt service, you can also find the right belt tensioners and pulleys to ensure proper belt fit, routing, and tension.
