Belts & Hoses
Driving engine accessories and moving fluids throughout their respective systems is essential for optimal vehicle performance. Maintaining the belts and hoses on your vehicle can help keep you on the road.
What Kind of Belt Does My Car Have?
Depending on the age of your vehicle, your engine accessories may be driven by either serpentine belts or V-belts. Most serpentine belts, also known as drive belts, usually drive all of the engine accessories with one long belt, while older engines may use a V-belt for each individual accessory. Serpentine belts use automatic belt tensioners and pulleys to maintain the proper tension, and V-belts are normally tightened by adjusting the position of an idler pulley or the accessory being driven.
Hoses
The hoses on your vehicle allow the various fluids, including coolant, power steering, and transmission fluid, to flow through the proper channels in and out of the engine and transmission. PCV hoses also allow crankcase gases to vent excess pressure, and vacuum hoses connect to sensors and systems that require a vacuum to operate correctly. Hose connectors and hose clamps are designed to ensure that each hose is held in place and to prevent leaks at each connection.
Shop Belts and Hoses
Belts and hoses are made of rubber, and will wear out over time. A broken belt or leaking hose can leave you stranded or result in engine damage, so it's important to regularly inspect your belts and hoses for signs of wear or damage. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a wide variety of belts, hoses, tensioners, hose clamps, and accessories to keep your vehicle running its best.
