A/C Compressors and Compressor Clutches

The A/C compressor in your vehicle is one of the core components of the air conditioning system. The compressor and clutch must be operating correctly to keep the cabin of your vehicle cool during the hottest summer days. If the compressor or clutch stops working, it can become uncomfortable to drive and might even be dangerous during extremely hot days. Find the A/C compressor and clutch you need for your repair at O'Reilly Auto Parts.

New and Remanufactured A/C Compressors

A properly-functioning compressor is necessary for your A/C to work correctly. The A/C compressor pressurizes the refrigerant in the A/C system and pumps it to the condenser for the next step of the cooling process. If the compressor leaks or does not properly pressurize the refrigerant, the air coming out of the A/C vents in your vehicle may be warmer than expected or possibly even hot. Over time, the internal components of the compressor may wear out or break. When this happens, you may notice clunking or squeaking noises coming from the compressor. Ensuring that your compressor installation or A/C system recharge includes the appropriate amount and type of A/C oil can help prevent compressor damage or premature failure to deliver the longest compressor life and the best air conditioning performance.

Replacement A/C Clutches

The A/C clutch is attached to the compressor and compressor pulley to engage the compressor when the air conditioning system is activated, as well as to disengage the compressor when the system reaches a specific pressure. This allows your A/C to run at a consistent temperature instead of blowing as cold as possible at all times, reducing the load on the engine. When an A/C clutch wears out you may hear loud noises or squealing when the clutch tries to engage. You may also notice that your A/C only works part of the time, or that the clutch fails to engage at all. Low A/C system refrigerant levels can also prevent the clutch from engaging, which may make it appear that the clutch is worn out or broken. Make sure to check the refrigerant level in your A/C system and test other components before replacing the A/C clutch to ensure it is the source of the problem.
