Spring Auto Tune-Up

Now that winter is behind us, millions of drivers will take to the roads to enjoy the warmer weather. Spring is the perfect time of year to make sure your vehicle is ready for the upcoming travel season.

washing wheels

Check your exterior to ensure safe driving

  • Start by checking the wipers. Replace them every six months or when they’re cracked, split, torn, streaking or chattering.
  • Next, check the tires. Look for bulges and bald spots. Also, check the air pressure and inspect the tread for uneven wear, which could indicate the need for a wheel alignment.

Protect your vehicle's paint and resale value

  • Get your spray nozzle, bucket, sponge (or mitt) and car wash soap—washing your vehicle by hand is the best way to make sure it’s cleaned gently and thoroughly.
  • If your trim is looking faded, apply some trim restorer with an applicator pad to renew its original color.
  • Once your vehicle is clean, apply wax. Waxing your vehicle regularly is an easy way to keep it looking good by protecting your paint from sun damage and sediment.
  • Clean your glass. Use only automotive glass cleaner that won’t damage tint or paint.
  • Scrub your tires using a firm, contoured brush and tire cleaner.
  • Finally, choose a wheel cleaner appropriate for your type of wheel.
under the hood

Check under the hood

  • If your vehicle has a Check Engine light illuminated on the dash while you are driving, start by scanning for fault codes. This can alert you to any issues that have the potential to become bigger problems, and O'Reilly VeriScan Check Engine light diagnostic services are available for free at all O'Reilly Auto Parts locations.
  • Change your oil. Changing your vehicle’s oil and filter at regular maintenance intervals will ensure that your car operates at peak efficiency.
  • Have your battery tested. Batteries typically last 3-5 years. Replacing your old battery with a new battery before it dies can prevent the unneeded stress of being stranded.
  • Check your fluids (brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, power steering fluid). Regular fluid checks ensure your vehicle will run properly. Consult your owner's manual for specific guidelines.
  • Inspect your hoses and belts. A blown hose can lead to an overheated engine. If a belt snaps, it can leave you stranded.
  • Filters, including air filters, fuel filters, and engine oil filters, keep air and fluids clean and flowing so your vehicle can run efficiently. Spring is a great time to change filters if needed.
  • Last but not least, spark plugs and wires are a good way to keep your engine operating at maximum efficiency, even if there aren't any major issues or misfires.

under the vehicle

Check under the vehicle

  • Inspect your brake system, including brake pads and rotors (or brake shoes and drums). Replacing worn or damaged parts can return your car’s brake system to optimal function.
  • Check the shocks and struts for signs of physical damage, such as leaking, rusting or dents.
  • Pay attention to leaks. Leaks are warning signs that your vehicle could have larger problems. Don’t let them go unrepaired.
