Step-By-Step Instructions to Use a Pulley Puller and Installer

A pulley puller and installer is designed to safely remove and install pulleys that operate your vehicle’s belt-driven components, including the alternator, power steering pump, and harmonic balancer or crankshaft pulleys. The tool acts as a compact press, providing the power necessary to service pulleys and install them safely and properly on new components before reassembly. The following video and instructions detail how to use the EverTough pulley puller and installer kit to service the pulley on a power steering pump, but the procedures will be similar for most press-style pulleys.

Our Evertough pulley pullers are versatile and are designed to be used for a variety of projects and pulley sizes to help ensure you can properly service your vehicle. If you’re not completely comfortable doing this yourself, we can recommend a local repair shop to perform the repairs your vehicle may need. Whether you’re looking to check and fill power steering fluid or if you’d like more information on symptoms of a bad power steering pump, let O’Reilly Auto Parts supply you with the parts, information, and automotive rental tools to get the job done right. You can also learn more about our Loaner Tool Program, where you have access to over 80 professional-grade specialty tools with only a refundable deposit required at the time of pickup.

Remove the Pulley from the Old Pump

A two image split of the pulley puller/installer kit, wrenches, safety glasses and gloves laid out. Gloved hands hold a forcing screw and lubricate it to use in an old pulley.

Step 1: Prep the Old Pump

Start by lubricating the forcing screw and thread it into the puller housing. Put the puller in place on the pulley and position the clam shells so that they will catch the lip in the center. Make sure both pieces of the clam shells are oriented properly and evenly.
The retaining ring is added to the pulley mechanism.

Step 2: Remove the Old Pulley

Slide the retaining ring on until the clam halves are completely enclosed.
Two wrenches are used to turn the forcing screw enough for it to be removed.

Use 5/8” and 13/16” or 16 and 21mm wrenches, or a 5/8” or 16mm socket with a ratchet or breaker bar, to turn the forcing screw until the pulley presses off the shaft.

Install the Pulley on the New Pump

The threads of the new installation bolts are lubricated before use.

Step 3: Prep the New Pump

Determine which of the installation bolts you’ll need and lubricate the threads.
The installation bolt is assembled into the new pulley.

Assemble the bolt and pressure bearing, and set the pulley in place on the shaft. Thread the installer assembly into the main shaft.
The installation bolt is secured using a 9/16 inch wrench and a 11/16 inch.

Step 4: Install the Pulley on the New Pump

Secure the installation bolt with a 9/16” or 14mm wrench or a socket and ratchet and turn the pressure bearing with a 11/16” or 17mm wrench until the pulley bottoms out, indicating it is fully pressed-on and secure.
