Transmission Tools & Accessories

With regular maintenance, your vehicle’s transmission can give you years of dependable performance. When it’s time to change the fluid and filter in your automatic transmission or replace the clutch, throwout bearing and pressure plate in your manual transmission, O’Reilly Auto Parts is here to help. We have the parts you need for everything from basic transmission maintenance to repair parts like control modules, bearings, seals, pressure switches, mounts and even rebuild kits. The transmission converts the engine’s rotational power into torque, which is sent to the axle causing the wheels to rotate. The reason a transmission is necessary is because the power produced by the engine has a too high and variable RPM to be used for driving, and must be reduced through the proper gear ratio in order for the vehicle to be controlled at an appropriate speed. The transmission also utilizes a clutch or torque converter to decouple the transmission from the engine to allow your vehicle to remain stationary when you come to a stop. There are two main categories of transmissions, manual and automatic. The manual transmission is controlled by the driver, who uses a foot pedal clutch to switch gears. Manual transmission vehicles can be equipped with a number of gear options, but many modern vehicles are equipped with 5-speed or 6-speed transmissions. Automatic transmissions change gears without the driver having to operate a clutch. They come equipped with a gear range selector, and use transmission fluid pressure to activate the appropriate gear for the vehicle at different speeds. This allows the driver to select drive and allow the transmission to shift gears automatically at the appropriate shift points. Some models may also have variations of the automatic transmission such as semi-automatic or continuously variable transmissions (CVT).
