What is a Windshield Washer Pump?

The windshield washer pump moves washer fluid from the washer fluid reservoir through the feed tubes and nozzles to spray the windshield. The washer pump is activated by the windshield wiper switch that is located on the side of the steering column or on the dashboard, and may require you to push, pull, twist, or otherwise engage the switch for the pump to operate. Some bigger vehicles like SUVs, vans, or station wagons may also have a rear window washer pump that can be used separately, although it functions in the same way as a windshield washer pump. The washer pump is powered by an electric motor that builds pressure to force the washer fluid through the washer feed tubes and onto the windshield. The windshield washer pump on your vehicle may become damaged by debris, in an accident, or could simply wear out with age. Common symptoms that indicate windshield washer pump failure include dirt in the nozzles, clogged washer feed tubes, or coolant leaking from the reservoir near the washer pump. In most cases, if you engage the switch but the washer pump doesn't activate, or if the washer fluid pressure is low, this is the clearest indication of a damaged washer pump. You can test if the wiper switch is working by activating the wiper switch with the vehicle on but the engine not running, and listen if the washer pump is functioning during application. If the pump motor is not running or if you do not hear it activating, a voltmeter can verify if the wiper switch is receiving power, and you may also want to check the washer fluid pump fuse to ensure it is intact. If the pump is receiving appropriate voltage but no fluid is spraying, you may need a replacement washer pump. To maintain the windshield washer pump's life, be sure to always keep wiper fluid in the reservoir, keep the washer jets clean, and try not to continue operating the washer pump if it's not working as it should. Keeping your windshield clean is important to safe driving, and O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a variety of washer pumps for most vehicles along with the best windshield washer fluid options for a variety of applications, as well as the right washer fluid to help you maintain a clean, clear windshield.
