Windshield Washer Pumps and Components

Windshield washers allow you to clean your windshield whenever it becomes dirty using fluid that can loosen stuck-on contaminants with the help of your windshield wipers. This helps keep your windshield clear during dry weather or clean off dirt and debris, such as mud, bugs, and more. Leaks, clogs, and other washer pump failures can make it unsafe to drive and prevent you from seeing clearly through the windshield. If your windshield washer is not spraying, is spraying with low pressure, or is leaking, get the parts you need for your repair at O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Washer Fluid Reservoirs

Washer fluid reservoirs store the washer fluid until you are ready to use it on the windshield. Most washer fluid reservoirs are made from plastic, which can wear out and break over time due to heat and cold from the elements, or from the heat produced by the engine. The plastic of the reservoir can also suffer damage in a collision or the grommets which seal the pump can wear out, causing all of the washer fluid to leak out. If your washer fluid reservoir is broken or leaking, it should be replaced as soon as possible so you can keep your windshield clear.

Washer Pumps

The windshield washer pump pulls the washer fluid from the reservoir and moves it through the hoses to the nozzles, which spray the fluid on the windshield. Normal wear and tear, as well as exposure to the elements or electrical system failure, can cause a washer pump to develop leaks or completely stop working. Most washer pumps are mounted on the washer fluid reservoir, but some may be mounted remotely and connected to the pump with hoses. Washer pumps can normally be heard when activated, but you may still need to inspect the fuses and windshield wiper switch to ensure they are working properly before you replace the washer pump. Shop O'Reilly Auto Parts if you need to replace your windshield washer pump, washer pump fuse, windshield wiper switch, or other parts of the wiper system.

Washer Fluid Hose

Washer fluid hoses carry the washer fluid from the pump to the spray nozzles. Depending on the location of the washer reservoir and pump, the washer fluid hose may run to the washer nozzles from the front of the engine bay or across the top of the fender. Some washer fluid hoses are one piece from the pump to the nozzle, but other hoses are designed with multiple connected pieces that use flexible rubber connectors to maintain the flow of fluid. If the washer fluid hose or line is weak or damaged due to age and wear, or if the pressure from the washer fluid pump is too high, the hose can burst or come apart at the connectors. This will cause the washer fluid to leak out and not reach the spray nozzles. Broken or leaking washer fluid hoses should be replaced as soon as possible so you can keep your windshield clean and clear.
