Why Is Transmission Fluid Important?

Transmission fluid is designed to lubricate the moving parts in your vehicle's transmission, and is also used as a hydraulic fluid in automatic transmissions to engage the appropriate gear for smooth shifting. Though some vehicles have sealed transmissions that don't allow fluid levels to be easily checked, many vehicles have a transmission dipstick near the firewall that allows you to regularly check the level and condition of your transmission fluid. Transmission fluid is typically red in color, but over time, may turn to a dark brown or even black hue. Due to the heat generated inside the transmission, the fluid may also break down over time, which can prevent it from performing at its best or result in transmission overheating and damage. Low levels of transmission fluid can also cause transmission damage, hard shifting, or difficulty getting the vehicle to move when in gear. What type of transmission fluid you need depends on your vehicle's year, make, and model, and our "Shop by Vehicle" feature can help you select the transmission fluid that is right for your car. Your vehicle's owner's manual will also provide transmission fluid specifications and service requirements, and regular transmission service and maintenance is necessary to keep your car on the road for as long as possible. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a complete line of transmission fluid options to help you find the best fluid for your vehicle's transmission service or maintenance.
