What is a Trailer Connector Kit?

A trailer connector kit, also known as a trailer wiring kit or trailer wiring harness, is a set of components used to link a car or truck to a trailer and allow the trailer lights and accessories to operate. This electrical connection ensures that power reaches the trailer brake, tail, and turn signal lights so that it remains visible on the road. A trailer connector kit is essential for syncing the lights and signals on the trailer with the towing vehicle and ensuring proper operation. The kit may be designed to be specific to the application, allowing for plug-and-play installation with no cutting or rewiring needed. It may also include mounting brackets, screws, or clips to secure the wiring harness and connectors, as well as various electrical components, relays, or wires for controlling brake lights, turn signals, running lights, and sometimes the electric brakes on a trailer. Over time, the trailer connector can develop corrosion, connection or wire damage, or be otherwise damaged due to exposure to the elements or an accident. If your trailer lights are not activating or responding correctly, then there might be an issue with the trailer connector or wiring harness that needs to be addressed. Trailer connector kits can also be added to vehicles that did not previously have towing capabilities, and are a great option when adding a trailer hitch to your truck or SUV. At O'Reilly Auto Parts we carry new trailer wiring kits, wiring plugs, trailer light adapters, and trailer connector kits for most towing vehicles.
