What Does a Power Steering Cooler Do?

A power steering cooler is designed to reduce the temperature of power steering fluid while the steering system operates. The power steering cooler uses a tube surrounded by ribs or fins that act as a heatsink for power steering fluid as it passes through. This is intended to reduce the stress on other power steering components. Increased temperatures can speed up the wear and tear of power steering parts, increasing the risk of power steering pump, hose, or steering gear failure. While not equipped on all vehicles, power steering coolers are typically found on trucks and SUVs whose power steering systems may experience increased stress from towing or off-road use. If your vehicle has a power steering cooler, and you are having to refill the power steering fluid more frequently than usual, you may need to inspect your power steering system for signs of wear or damage. A failing or leaking power steering cooler may also cause power steering leaks under the front end of your vehicle, odd noises coming from under the hood, or you may notice rust, corrosion, or wet spots on or around the power steering cooler. Before replacing your power steering cooler, check your power steering hoses for splits or cracks and inspect the rest of the system for signs of leaks. If your power steering cooler is damaged or leaking, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement units for most vehicles, as well as power steering hoses, pumps, and more to help you restore safe, comfortable handling.
