Replacing a Strut Bellows or Bumper

A strut bellows, or strut dust cover boot, is a protective rubber or plastic component that covers the strut or shock absorber to keep the exposed strut rod free of any dirt, debris, moisture, or other contaminants that may cause corrosion and premature wear or damage. A strut bumper, which is often installed in tandem with the bellows, is often installed at the end of the bellows to prevent the strut from fully compressing. This provides a cushion between the strut body and strut mount to keep metal-on-metal contact and protect the strut assembly. Over time, exposure to harsh conditions, road debris, and temperature variations can cause the strut bumper or bellows to deteriorate, tear, or crack. This can allow moisture or debris to damage the strut rod, leading to corrosion that may result in stiffness or premature damage to the strut seal. Damaged strut seals can cause fluid or gas to leak from the struts and prevent them from adequately dampening vibrations and bumps while driving. Inspecting the strut bumper and bellows, as well as the strut itself, can help you determine if the strut requires service. You may also notice your vehicle nose-diving on hard braking, squatting on acceleration, or experience a less comfortable ride or vibrations if one or more of your struts has been damaged. If you're replacing your vehicle's struts, it is also a good idea to replace the bellows, strut bumpers, and strut bearing (where applicable) at the same time for a complete, long-lasting strut repair. For your next suspension repair, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for strut bellows, strut bumpers, and complete strut assemblies for most applications, as well as the strut bearings and tools you need to get the job done right the first time.
