Should I Upgrade to a Performance Starter?

The starter on your vehicle is used to crank the engine and initiate the combustion process needed for the engine to operate. When you turn the key in the ignition cylinder or press the start button in your vehicle, the starting gear in your starter receives power, which engages your engine's flywheel or flexplate. Your engine begins rotating as the flywheel is engaged, allowing it to suck air and fuel into the engine's cylinders to begin the combustion cycle. Vehicles with performance engines may have higher compression, tighter clearances, or a higher initial spark advance, which will all require more torque to start the engine. Upgraded engines can put stress on a factory starter, causing it to overheat and fail. A performance starter is designed to provide more torque, allowing your performance engine to start smoothly and consistently. Performance starters are usually made of aluminum, making them lighter and stronger than original steel starters, and the gear reduction design provides more torque to crank over and power high-combustion engines. If you want to add performance starting to your vehicle, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts. We can help you find the right performance starter or other related performance parts for all your upgrading and customizing needs.
