Motor Oil

Motor oil lubricates internal engine parts and coats the inside of your engine to prevent overheating, friction and damage to moving parts. It is also designed to catch small particles and suspend them to prevent engine damage along with help from your oil filter. These particles are trapped by the filter but oxidation, heat, dirt and debris can eventually contaminate the oil and reduce its ability to protect your engine. Changing your oil and replacing the oil filter regularly can help ensure that your engine is protected against damage and runs at its best.

Regular Oil Changes and Maintenance

The motor oil in your engine can only last so long and eventually it can start to break down. Over time motor oil can lose its ability to properly lubricate the internal parts of the engine and the risk of damage increases. To prevent issues caused by old or contaminated oil, such as overheating, sludge buildup and bearing or cylinder wall damage, motor oil should be changed and the oil filter replaced approximately every three months with regular use. Many light duty vehicles have an oil change interval of between 3,000 and 5,000 miles but it is important to observe the recommended mileage interval from your vehicle's manufacturer. Heavy duty vehicles, such as work trucks and towing vehicles may require oil changes more often to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Ensuring your vehicle always has the right quantity and weight of clean oil to help keep the internal parts of your engine turning smoothly for extended engine life.

Motor Oil Types and Weights

O'Reilly Auto Parts offers a variety of conventional, high mileage and full synthetic motor oil for most passenger vehicles, as well as heavy duty and diesel motor oils for specialty vehicles. Check your owner's manual for your manufacturer's recommended oil type and weight. Even if your vehicle only requires conventional oil, upgrading to a full synthetic option can increase performance and extend engine life. High mileage synthetic or conventional oils can also provide added benefits for vehicles with over 75,000 miles and are a great motor oil upgrade for an older vehicle.
