2012 Toyota Avalon - Power Steering Pressure Switch
What is a Power Steering Pressure Switch?
The power steering pressure switch, or sensor, in your vehicle monitors the fluid in the power steering pressure system and collects data to send to the vehicle's computer. This information allows the ECU to adjust the engines operations as needed, depending on pressure and fluid levels in the power steering system. If your power steering pressure drops suddenly or is too low, the sensor can alert the vehicle's computer, activating a dashboard warning light to alert you of the problem. The switch is composed of two electrical sensors, which are consistently exposed to heat. Over time, your power steering pressure switch can wear down due to heat or use. If the power steering pressure switch fails, you may notice decreased engine power or performance, such as engine revs dropping when steering, or the engine stalling during low speed turning or parking. You may also recognize an illuminated Check Engine light. If you notice these symptoms, check your power steering pressure switch and fluid levels. If you have a leak, check your power steering hoses and pump for signs of fluid.
