What is a Headlight Dimmer Switch?

The headlight dimmer switch on your vehicle allows you to control high- and low-beam headlight functions while driving. In most newer vehicles, this switch is located on the turn signal or headlight control arm on your steering column. Older vehicles may use a switch mounted to the left side of the floorboard designed to be controlled with your foot. In either case, the headlight dimmer switch is designed to lock into high- or low-beam mode until it is used again. Over time and with use, the headlight dimmer switch can wear down or suffer electrical damage or failure and need to be replaced. If you notice your headlights are stuck on one setting or if you're having difficulty switching between high beams and low beams, you should inspect your headlight dimmer switch for any signs of wear. Problems with this dimmer switch can also cause your headlights to stop working entirely, leaving your vehicle with no headlights and creating a dangerous driving situation. Before replacing the headlight dimmer switch, inspect your headlight assembly and bulbs for any burnt-out bulbs, check your fuse box for blown fuses or damaged relays, and check to see if your headlight switch is working on any setting. If all of these components are working as they should, it might be time to replace your headlight dimmer switch. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a selection of switches, including combination and headlight dimmer switches, turn signal switches, and more.
