Automotive Sensors for Engines, Body, and Tires

Sensors located throughout your vehicle not only help keep the engine running its best, but also control body actuators and motors, relay signals from the braking and steering to the engine computer or body control module, or help alert drivers to low tire pressure. Automotive sensors fall into three categories, including engine sensors, body sensors, and tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors, and every sensor on the vehicle has the potential to fail or weaken over time. This can cause a variety of problems depending on which sensors have failed, and in many cases, the only way to repair sensor wear or damage is to replace the sensor.

Engine Sensors

The sensors on the engine and emissions system of your vehicle help control the various functions of the engine and transmit measurements to the engine control module (ECM) to make the necessary adjustments for peak performance and efficiency. The most common sensors that require attention on many vehicles are oxygen sensors, mass air flow (MAF) sensors, camshaft and crankshaft sensors, and coolant temperature sensors. All of these sensors play a part in how the engine runs, and if they send inaccurate signals or fail to work as they should, it could cause timing issues and misfires, overheating, knocking or pinging, and a drop in gas mileage and overall performance.

Body and TPMS Sensors

The sensors on the body and wheels of your vehicle are also used to keep your car driving safely. This can include the TPMS sensors that alert you to a drop in tire pressure, as well as steering angle sensors, air bag sensors, climate control system sensors, brake pedal and ABS sensors, and a variety of other components that are responsible for the way that the vehicle drives and functions. Failing or damaged sensors can cause poor braking, problems with engine or steering performance, or a variety of lights on the dashboard to warn you of non-working features like anti-lock brakes (ABS), air bags, or simply a Check Engine light to alert you to codes stored in the computer. No matter what type of sensor problems you may be experiencing, O'Reilly Auto Parts can help you diagnose your issue with free Check Engine light testing. This service is available at every one of our stores, and can help you narrow down the problem so you can make your repair. If you determine that you have a failing O2 sensor, oil pressure sensor, or other electrical system problems, we can help you find the best parts to get your vehicle back to performing at its best.
