Headlight, Tail Light, and Turn Signal Assemblies

The lighting assemblies on the outside of your vehicle are designed to properly reflect and direct the light coming from the bulbs for maximum visibility, and also protect the bulbs against damage due to debris, moisture, and other environmental factors. These lights include headlight assemblies, tail light assemblies, marker lights, license plate lights, brake light assemblies, parking lights, and more that help keep your vehicle safe and legal on the road. Over time, exterior lighting assemblies can suffer damage or wear, and may appear chalky or crack and leak. Chalked headlight assemblies can reduce visibility, which can make it less safe to drive at night. In some cases, headlight restoration can help to make the lenses clear again and allow light to pass through more easily. If you try to restore your headlight lenses or other exterior lighting assemblies and see no improvement, or if they are cracked or damaged, the entire assembly may need to be replaced. Cracks or damage can also allow moisture into the assembly, which could cause the bulbs to burn out prematurely. If your headlight, tail light, turn signal, side marker light, or other lighting assemblies have been damaged or are no longer protecting the bulbs as they should, shop the selection of replacement assemblies available at O'Reilly Auto Parts.

How to Replace Lighting Assemblies

Replacing a lighting assembly on your vehicle can be a daunting task, but is a repair that most do-it-yourselfers can achieve. In most cases, headlight assemblies and other lighting assemblies are simply held in place by screws, though it may be necessary to remove the grille or surrounding trim to access them. There may also be body clips that need to be released, either by pulling on the assembly by hand or using a body trim tool to prevent paint damage. Once the lighting assembly is loose, you will need to remove one or more connectors or turn the bulb sockets counterclockwise to release them from the assembly. Once the assembly is out, reinstall the bulbs and connectors in the new lighting assembly and press it back into place, pushing by hand until the clips are reengaged if necessary. Then it can simply be secured with the screws or bolts and the rest of the vehicle reassembled.
