The horn relay is the electrical component, typically located in the fuse box, which is used to send signals from the horn switch to the horn itself. A working horn on your vehicle allows you to communicate with or warn other drivers on the road when necessary. Horn relays are typically open, and only connect and close the circuit to send power to the horn when activated by a signal from the horn switch in the steering wheel. This allows the horn to function and sound, and then the relay is disconnected when the horn switch has been released. Like all relays, the horn relay may suffer wear or damage that can cause it to become stuck in the open or closed position. If your horn is producing a weak sound or doesn't work at all, you may have a faulty horn relay, horn switch, or the horn itself may not be working as it should. A relay that becomes stuck in the closed position may also cause the horn to sound unexpectedly or constantly, which can be dangerous and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. If you suspect the issues you are experiencing are due to a faulty horn relay, locate your vehicle's fuse box, typically underneath the hood, and use the diagram under the fuse box lid or in your owners manual to find the appropriate relay. If you test the relay and it seems to be working, it may indicate that other parts of the horn system are not operating as they should. O'Reilly Auto Parts has a selection of horn parts, including replacement horns, horn buttons, airbag clocksprings, and horn relays to help you find the right repair solution for your vehicle.
