Symptoms of a Bad Ignition Switch

Your vehicle's ignition switch makes it possible to power on your engine, electrical systems, and starting components. A keyed ignition switch can activate the Accessory, Start, or Run circuits when you turn the key, though some modern vehicles use a push-start button to start your engine. The ignition switch is connected to the ignition lock cylinder, which secures your vehicle and controls the function of the ignition switch based on the position of your key as it turns. After inserting and turning your key, the ignition switch sends signals to activate the appropriate electrical systems in your vehicle. Your vehicle's accessories, such as the radio and power windows, may be powered in all of your ignition switch's positions. Other items like the starter, engine computer, and ignition system may only be activated in the Start and Run positions. Your ignition switch is used each time you turn your key to start your engine, and this frequent use can result in wear over time. A faulty ignition switch can lead to a variety of electrical problems or system malfunctions, cause the engine to stall or the steering wheel to lock, or could result in a complete loss of power. If you are having trouble starting your vehicle, turning on your radio, controlling your power windows or other accessories, or if your vehicle starts and then fails to stay running, you might need to replace your ignition switch. These could also be signs of a damaged ignition lock cylinder or key fob, so ensure a complete diagnosis before replacing your ignition switch. At O'Reilly Auto Parts, we carry replacement ignition switches and ignition lock cylinders for most vehicles to help you make your repair and keep your vehicle on the road.
