What is an Ignition Lock Cylinder?h2>

An ignition lock cylinder is a keyed lock tumble used to secure your car and activate your vehicle's ignition switch to start the engine. Ignition lock cylinders activate your vehicle's ignition switch and change its position to send power to the accessory circuit, fuel pump, and computer system when turning the key to start your vehicle. Over time, your ignition lock cylinder may show signs of wear or may suffer damage and be more difficult to turn. Your key may also be harder to insert or remove from the ignition lock cylinder, and may become stuck or seem especially loose. In some cases, electronic sensors inside the ignition lock cylinder may also stop working and can prevent your key from starting your vehicle, or it may start but fail to stay running. This can also be a symptom of a damaged or worn ignition switch, so be sure to perform a complete diagnosis before replacing the lock cylinder. If your ignition lock cylinder is aging or is noticeably worn, or if you notice difficulty starting your vehicle or your keys become stuck in your vehicle's ignition, these may be signs that your ignition lock cylinder needs to be replaced. If you're ready to repair your ignition lock cylinder, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts in-store or online. We carry a variety of replacement ignition lock cylinders complete with keys for most vehicles to best meet your ignition repair needs.
