High-Performance Ignition Coils vs Stock

The ignition coil is the component responsible for converting electrical power from the battery into high voltage that is used by the spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the engine's cylinders. In older vehicle ignition systems, power from the battery passes to the ignition coil, then to the distributor the spark plugs. Modern vehicles feature coil-on-plug technology, which means that each spark plug has its own ignition coil controlled by the engine's electronic control unit (ECU). A performance ignition coil is specifically designed to provide a more powerful and consistent spark. The more voltage the coil can supply, the more powerful your spark will be, especially if you upgrade the spark plugs and wires to high-performance components at the same time. An underperforming ignition coil may produce weak spark, which can cause misfires, poor or hesitant acceleration, or even prevent your vehicle from starting at all. Upgrading to a performance ignition coil can improve ignition system performance, and is a must for racing or high-output applications. When you're ready to upgrade your ignition system, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for high-performance ignition coils, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and more to help you achieve maximum performance.
