Your oil pressure sensor or switch monitors oil pressure levels in the engine to prevent premature wear and alerts you to low oil pressure before it causes catastrophic engine failure. An oil pressure sensor or switch sends signals to the engine computer, and may also directly or indirectly trigger your oil pressure gauge or low-pressure warning light. If the oil pressure sensor or switch in your vehicle stops functioning properly, it could provide inaccurate readings or fail to send oil pressure measurements at all. This may cause the oil pressure light to come on, or the oil pressure gauge may read very high or not display any reading. This may also occur if you don't have the appropriate type or amount of oil in your engine if your oil pump is no longer working as it should, or if the oil passages in your engine have become clogged with sludge or debris. Before replacing your oil pressure sensor or oil sending unit, check your oil level and condition and listen to your engine run. If you're low on oil, add what is needed or perform a complete oil change to restore its level and condition. If you notice any ticking, knocking, or clunking noises from the engine, or you can smell oil burning, there may be other issues that will need to be addressed to prevent engine damage or failure. After you've completed your inspection, if the oil level is appropriate, the engine seems to be running as it should, and there are no other notable issues, it may be time to replace your oil pressure sensor or switch. Shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for the right oil pressure switch, oil sending unit, or oil pressure sensor to help you make a complete repair.
