What Is An Oil Pressure Sensor?

Your oil pressure sensor or switch monitors oil pressure levels in the engine to prevent premature wear and alerts you to low oil pressure before it causes catastrophic engine failure. An oil pressure sensor or switch sends signals to the engine computer, and may also directly or indirectly trigger your oil pressure gauge or low-pressure warning light. If the oil pressure sensor or switch in your vehicle stops functioning properly, it could provide inaccurate readings or fail to send oil pressure measurements at all. This may cause the oil pressure light to come on, or the oil pressure gauge may read very high or not display any reading.
