What is a Transfer Case Gasket?

A transfer case gasket seals fluid inside the transfer case to prevent leaks. Located behind your vehicle's transmission, the transfer case uses a chain drive to transfer power from your transmission to the front and rear differential. This allows the vehicle to be shifted into and out of four-wheel drive as needed, and ensures that power reaches the appropriate differential(s) when the transfer case is shifted. Since the chain and gears inside the transfer case work continuously, they require lubrication to keep cool, and the transfer case gasket acts as a seal to protect these parts and ensure they function properly. Over time, a transfer case gasket can fail, which may lead to whining noises when shifting into or out of four-wheel drive, rattling noises on the highway, grinding noises below the floorboards, an inability to shift from two-wheel to four-wheel drive, or brownish-red fluid under the middle of your vehicle. If you experience any of these symptoms, check your transfer case gasket and seals for signs of damage to determine where it may be leaking.
