What is an Exhaust Manifold Gasket?

The exhaust manifold gasket is located between the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold, and is designed to seal this connection and prevent exhaust leaks. Exhaust manifold gaskets are constructed of temperature-resistant materials, such as graphite, steel, copper, or a multi-layered metal design to withstand the extreme temperatures and pressures generated by the combustion process of the engine. Some exhaust gaskets may also include other materials, such as silicone or rubber coatings for increased sealing and leak prevention or temperature protection. Exhaust manifold gaskets may suffer damage or fail over time or due to extremely high engine temperatures or exhaust back pressure. An improperly-sealed or worn-out exhaust manifold gasket can lead to an exhaust leak, which may cause noticeable engine noise. Other symptoms of a damaged exhaust manifold gasket include decreased engine performance, increased emissions, and poor fuel economy. If you've noticed excessive noise from your engine or exhaust, check your exhaust manifold gasket and exhaust components for signs of an exhaust leak. Any time the exhaust manifold is removed for repair, you should also replace your exhaust manifold gasket to ensure it continues to perform as it should. For all your exhaust repair needs, shop O'Reilly Auto Parts' selection of replacement exhaust manifold gaskets, collector gaskets, exhaust clamps, and more to help you complete your repair.
