What is a Distributor O-Ring?

A distributor O-ring is a component in the distributor assembly used to create a tight and leak-free seal between the distributor housing and the engine block or cylinder head. This ensures the proper operation of the distributor and prevents moisture or debris from contaminating the oil supply. The distributor receives electrical power from the ignition coil and sends it to the spark plugs in time with the compression stroke to ignite the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Distributors can typically be rotated to adjust ignition timing, allowing for manual control over engine performance. If the distributor has been removed for service, it is also a good idea to replace the distributor O-ring to prevent oil contamination and other damage. Over time, distributor O-rings can deteriorate due to exposure to heat, engine oil, and other environmental factors. If you notice dirt in the crankcase or oil leaks near the distributor, check your distributor O-ring for breaks, cracks, or tears. If there is any damage, it's recommended to replace the O-ring to maintain the integrity of the seal.
