The Ford F-Series' crankshaft seal kit, sometimes called the rear main seal, is located on the rear of the block where the crankshaft and torque converter or clutch meets the transmission. The crankshaft seal keeps oil from leaking around the end of your Ford F-Series' crankshaft and out of the crankcase while permitting it to spin. Over time, the crankshaft seal can become hard and brittle, or it can wear or dry out, allowing the oil to leak from the engine. The rear crankshaft seal can be difficult to see, but if you see oil leaking off your Ford's transmission bell housing or the rear of the oil pan, the crankshaft seal may have failed. Keep an eye on your oil levels until you have an opportunity to replace the crankshaft seal, as a rapid oil leak may cause damage to your Ford's engine.
