CV Shaft, Driveshaft, and Axle Gaskets

Gaskets and seals help maintain fluid levels in transmissions and differentials. If you have a front-wheel drive vehicle, the transaxle likely uses CV axle or differential seals, while rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicles use differential gaskets, pinion seals and axle gaskets or O-rings. Differential Gaskets and Plugs

Differentials normally have a cover that can be removed to access the drive gears. When the covers are removed, the differential gasket will need to be replaced before the cover is reinstalled. The differential gasket helps seal the differential and prevent gear oil from leaking out, and may eventually break down or wear out and develop leaks with age. Many differentials also use plugs which can be removed to check the level of gear oil in the differential, and gear oil can simply be inspected, added, or removed through the hole. If your differential gasket is leaking or if your differential plug is missing, replacing these components should be a priority to prevent low fluid levels and gear oil contamination.

Differential and Pinion Seals

Differential and pinion seals are used to create a seal around the driveshaft. These seals allow the driveshaft to rotate without leaks. You may notice gear oil around the differential or on the ground if the seal wears enough to start leaking. If enough gear oil leaks from your differential, you will likely hear a whining noise from the differential. If all of the oil leaks out, the temperature in the differential may become high enough that the gears in the differential will experience premature wear or seize. Make sure to get the right differential and pinion seals, as well as the right gear oil, to complete the repair on your vehicle.
