How Does a Turbocharger Work?

A turbocharger, commonly referred to as a turbo, increases the power and efficiency of the engine by forcing more air into the combustion chamber. As opposed to a belt-driven supercharger, a turbocharger is powered by exhaust gasses to compress air and increase boost pressure. The turbocharger allows for more air and fuel to be burned in each combustion cycle, which leads to increased power output, improved engine performance, and in some cases, enhanced fuel efficiency. To ensure optimal performance, a turbocharger is equipped with a number of auxiliary components to control its operation. These include the wastegate, which regulates the exhaust gas flow to the turbine and prevents overboost, the bypass valve or blow-off valve, which releases excess compressed air when the throttle is closed, and the intercooler, which cools down the compressed air before it enters the engine for better combustion efficiency. Many vehicles are equipped with a turbocharger from the factory as they allow smaller displacement engines to create more power. They are also included on many diesel vehicles or can be added with an aftermarket kit for those wanting more engine performance. When a turbocharger fails, you may notice slower acceleration, your vehicle burning more oil, or a loud whining noise. This is often due to damage to the bearings inside the turbocharger, and if this is addressed before it fails completely, the turbo may be able to be rebuilt and reinstalled. If the turbo fails entirely, it can cause damage to the internal components or turbines, and replacement may be the best option.
