What Causes Fuel Tanks to Leak?

Your vehicle's fuel tank, or gas tank, is part of the fuel system that stores fuel until it is transported to the engine. It is common for the fuel tank to be made out of steel or aluminum, although many modern vehicles have plastic high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fuel tanks. HDPE tanks are often used to reduce overall vehicle weight and improve crash safety. The make and model of your vehicle will determine what material the original fuel tank is made of, and it is usually best to replace the fuel tank with one made of the same materials. Over time, fuel tanks can be dented or damaged, leading to cracks and leaks. Metal tanks can also rust and corrode, causing pinholes that can allow fuel to escape the tank as a liquid or vapor. Fuel tanks can also be damaged in vehicle collisions or accidents, and should always be inspected after a rear-end collision to ensure they are still safe to use. Some fuel tank leaks may be more noticeable, causing puddles of fuel to form underneath your vehicle. Smaller fuel leaks may allow fuel to evaporate and escape the fuel tank before a puddle can form, and you may notice the smell of gas or a reduction in fuel efficiency. If there is no visible leak but you still notice issues with your fuel mileage or performance, check the fuel filter and fuel lines for any clogs or restrictions, and inspect the fuel pump for any signs of damage. You may also be experiencing symptoms of a damaged fuel tank if you notice engine misfires, stalling, or fuel smells near the rear of the vehicle. If any of these occur, inspect your fuel tank and fuel system for damage, and make regular fuel tank inspection a routine to check for rust, leaks, damaged seams, and corrosion. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries fuel tanks, fuel lines, fuel filters, fuel pumps, gas caps, and more for all of your fuel system repair needs.
