The fuel sending unit on your Ford Focus contains a spring, a float, and lever that work in combination to send signals to the fuel gauge about the amount of gas that is inside the gas tank. Since the fuel sending unit is continually exposed to gasoline and gas fumes, it can corrode, or it can simply wear out with age. In some cases, the float may also fill with gas if it develops a leak, and may no longer float on top of the gasoline in the tank, providing inaccurate readings.
