What is a Fuel Pump Gasket?

The fuel pump gasket in your vehicle is designed to seal the fuel pump and prevent leaks between the gas tank and the electric fuel pump, or the engine and the mechanical fuel pump, depending on the vehicle. Fuel pump gaskets are commonly made of rubber or a paper gasket material, and creates a secure seal, in some cases with the use of sealer or gasket maker. Because the fuel pump gaskets are often made of flexible materials, they can become dry and brittle, and may wear out or crack over time. Damaged or worn fuel pump gaskets can result in fuel leaks, and should be repaired as soon as possible. If you need to replace the fuel pump in your vehicle, it is also recommended that you replace the fuel pump gasket at the same time to ensure a complete repair. If you are experiencing poor fuel mileage, fuel odors, engine misfiring, or starting issues, you may have a damaged fuel pump or fuel pump gasket. Some replacement pumps include a fuel pump gasket for a complete repair, but if the fuel pump is still working as it should, the gasket can also be replaced separately. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries all the fuel system parts and tools you need to make your repair, including fuel pumps, fuel pump gaskets, fuel line connectors, and more.
